Ectropion

In this eye disorder the lid suffers a loss of tone and flops away from the eye so that the inner surface of the lid becomes exposed, irritated and thickened. It occurs primarily in elderly people and is aggravated by excessive tearing. The wiping away of tears from the lower lid makes the lid droop even further. The drooping causes burning and irritation. An ectropion is a mechanical defect of the lids and can only be corrected by surgery.
