What Is An ALT?

An ALT is an abbreviation for Argon Laser Trabeculoplasty.

This is a glaucoma procedure done with the Argon Laser to allow the fluid inside the eye to flow Into the trabecular meshwork (drainage meshwork) more freely. As a result, the intraocular pressure Is lowered. It is indicated when a person with glaucoma cannot tolerate their eye drops, oral medication, or when the intraocular pressure cannot be adequately controlled by medication.

The procedure is done on an outpatient basis with no restrictions of activities, and is relatively painless. Some patients do experience moderate discomfort. It takes about 15 minutes per eye. Drops are routinely used pre and postoperatively.

The pressure will be checked one hour following the procedure and must be monitored frequently for a while.

It usually takes about one month to determine the effectiveness of the procedure. Since only half of the eye is usually treated at a session, it may be necessary to do the other half later.

Eye drops must usually be continued after treatment to control the intraocular pressure.

Total time in the office on day of surgery is usually 2 1/2 to 3 hours.
